Networking

Networking means using personal connections to support your job search and professional growth. Often, job-seekers are hesitant to attend networking events, contact friends and colleagues, or acquaintances for assistance. However, these individuals are often eager to help you succeed professionally. Your contacts may be able to help you identify job opportunities, provide industry insights, connect you with other professionals, recommend you to hiring teams, and more!

Building Your Network

Start now by developing a strong list of individuals you trust will positively advocate for you. We recommend brainstorming names of:

  • Professors

  • University of Cincinnati alumni

  • Members of community organizations and clubs you are a member of

  • Business contacts

  • Former and current colleagues and supervisors

Attending Career Events

As you are building your network, the Lindner Career Services team recommends you attend as many networking events and opportunities as possible. You can find Lindner-specific and university-wide opportunities through the job search platform, Handshake, in the “Events” tab. At these events, you will need to update your resume to be current, as well as practice your elevator pitch. Here are a few examples of our offerings:

  • Specialized Career Fair

  • Throughout the academic year, various business disciplines host industry-specific career fairs. The following majors currently offer specialized fairs: Accounting, Real Estate, Sales, and Insurance and Risk Management.

  • UC Professional and Technical Career Fair

  • Branded Tabling

  • Located in the Lindner College of Business atrium, between the Starbucks entrance and the Goering Center, our employer branding table offers a chance to connect with employers and learn more about their companies and opportunities.

These events do require advanced action to ensure that you are prepared and have a positive experience. Click on the buttons below to see our recommended items you need to know or possess before attending a networking event.

Follow Up Correspondence

After meeting with an employer, one of the best ways to maintain your connection is to send a follow- up email, as well as connect with them on LinkedIn. This shows that you are eager to work for their company and will help you stand out amongst other candidates. Responding to employers can feel a bit daunting, especially when you're aiming to leave a strong impression. Our sample messaging flowchart makes it easier to communicate confidently and professionally.
