What is/was life as a grad student at UC-Cob like?*An opportunity to learn more than you could ever imagine *UC Cob provides a non-competitive atmosphere that promotes teamwork, cooperation in class and outside class between students and even between grad students and their professors. *UC Cob has faculty who are leaders in their respective fields ,effective, and always willing to help. *Challenging-the most important one *Lots of Assignments (You've got to take the bad with the good sometimes) *Experiencing (and getting paid for) jobs ranging from Software Development to System Analysis to Databases to Data Warehousing to Network Management... If you feel my list is missing a few things you would be looking for in a college experience, don't worry- there's a whole life outside of the MS-IS program. (it just doesn't happen to be the focus of this website). I also realize that a list can't possibly encompass everything that UC-COB-MSIS means to me. So what is UC-COB-MS-IS, to anyone? It's whatever you choose to do with it. Biggest surprise about the MS-IS program? It's really surprising how in very short time this program has gained such good reputation of being one of the best in the Country. Thanks to its unparalleled industry practicum (Co-op) program and fine tuned course curriculum. Greatest opportunity provided by the MS-IS program? The greatest opportunity provided by MS-IS program is the invaluable co-op experience. I have spent my last three quarters as co-op in Software Development working with an e-commerce company in New York and a Software Services company in New Jersey. I got an opportunity to learn from some of the best people in the industry in an environment which was extremely challenging. At 1800-FLOWERS.com I worked with the team of Analysts and Developers to develop a J2EE based e-commerce application which is being used by customers to order gifts and flowers online. In my second project as a J2EE developer, I worked with Logical Design Solutions for their client, Honeywell Corporation. This project was an HR portal to be used by the employees of Honeywell Corporation in the US. I think the challenges that I faced and the insights of Software Industry that I got through my Co-op assignments will be invaluable when I enter the job market. Every Challenge that I faced here added to my educational and personal growth. Armed with these experiences and skill, I feel qualified for all kinds of challenges in my career, thanks to the MS-IS program's Co-op component. Hobbies, interests & activities? Computers, Hiking, Cricket, Tennis..

[ Top of Page ] Jesse A. Sestito Company: PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP Line of Service: Assurance and Business Advisory Services (ABAS) Specialty Line of Service: Systems and Process Assurance (SPA) – A sub-line of ABAS Description of position While I work on various types of projects, all deal centrally with internal controls and financial reporting. We begin by gaining an understanding of the business and information technology processes in place at the client. Through the use of flowcharts and narratives, we document our understanding of these processes, and make an assessment of whether or not the controls embedded in each process are suitably designed to achieve their objective. If suitable, we design testing procedures for these controls, select an appropriate sample to test and finally, execute the tests. After documenting and examining our results, we make a final determination of whether or not the controls are operating effectively. All of this, of course, is related to a company's ability to produce complete, accurate and timely financial information to interested parties (i.e. investors and creditors) because internal controls, both manual and automated, are relied upon to capture, summarize, and report such figures. How the MS-IS Program has prepared me for my career Through a focus on people, process, and technology, the MS-IS Program equips students with the necessary skills to achieve success in an Information Systems career. For me, these skills have proven to be directly transferable to my daily responsibilities at PwC. For example, proficiency in process modeling was imparted on me during study in the Systems and Analysis Design course. This foundation has been instrumental in the development of a skill necessary for success in my field. Database Principles provided training in data modeling and database design that is beneficial in understanding the clients' system and in utilizing DBMS, such as Access, in making sample selections from large and complex populations. While these courses have assisted in developing my technical knowledge, some of the most complex issues I encounter in my field are not technical, they are human. In that regards, other courses such as IS Project Management and IT for Managers have made me more conscious of the wide-ranging abilities today's Information Systems Professional must possess. In turn, I have been able to approach my interaction with colleagues and clients with a balanced view of how to solve business problems - through the use of Technical and Emotional Intelligence. In general, the MS-IS Program is both practical and challenging, a unique combination that prepares students for work in a number of Information Systems fields.
