Case Competitions

Teams of students are presented with a set of problems facing an actual contemporary business. The teams are asked to analyze the situation and justify their strategic recommendations to a panel of judges comprised of faculty, MBA alumni, and executives from prominent Cincinnati firms. The top three teams are then asked to refine their analysis and present again to a second panel of senior executives from national businesses. During both rounds of the competition, students are given a chance to shine by responding to questions and challenges from the judges, who are all well versed on the details of the case. In addition to demonstrating their skills to top corporate executives, the winning team also have their names placed on permanent display in Lindner Hall.

The CoB MBA New Venture Competition
Each January, the UC Center for Entrepreneurship Education & Research invites CoB MBA teams to submit and present their original new venture business plans in the CoB MBA New Venture Competition. Past teams have included students from the full, part-time and Blue Ash MBA programs, engineering, law and medicine. Teams competing that launch their ventures are eligible to apply for grants of up to $5,000 from the Bearcat Bridge Fund. The first place team represents UC in the annual UC Spirit of Enterprise Competition at the end of February. The first runner-up team also represents UC in other national business plan competitions.

The Cecil Boatright Business Plan/Case Competition
The Boatright Case Competition is yet another opportunity for teams of UC MBA students to have their problem-solving skills judged by professionals. The Small Business Institute® (SBI) program conducts numerous field case studies and judges their findings. The top three teams are awarded case scholarships and plaques commemorating their performance. The top team each year also has their names placed on a permanent plaque in Lindner Hall.

The George Washington University/KPMG Peat Marwick Case Competition
Held each spring in Washington, DC, UC representatives join MBA students from local, national and international business schools to analyze a current situation facing a nonprofit organization and present strategies that draw on the organization's assets. The GW/KPMG National MBA Case Competition showcases the talents of top MBA students by allowing them to apply their skills and problem-solving abilities to issues involving nonprofit organizations. The competition provides invaluable exposure to an extremely challenging market sector.
