When: January
Length of time in Chile: 3 weeks
Students are able to complete their International Business integral (15 credits) at UC and in Chile during winter quarter. Universidad del Desarrollo, our partner in Chile, provides a 3 week program that focuses on Latin American and Chilean business and economic development (particularly the Chilean economic miracle), cross-cultural management, and history and culture of the region. Students visit major Chilean industries: mining, forestry, fishing, fruit and wine production. The program includes a trip to Concepción, a highly industrialized port and Pucon, a popular tourist destination.
The City
Santiago (5,500,000) is a city of stark contrasts. On the one hand, it is a city with a gleaming new international airport, skyscrapers hosting telecommunications and financial services firms, and streets jammed with late model cars and people on cell phones. On the other hand, the city also has heavy motor vehicle traffic, pockets of extreme poverty and, because of the surrounding mountains and the heavy traffic, pollution in the winter months. The city is the political and economic capital of Chile, arguably the most stable and prosperous country in South America. Santiago provides easy access to the breath-taking beauty of the Andes and the Pacific coast.
Santiago is really made up of 31 semi-autonomous comunas or neighborhoods that surround the colonial core city. The city has many beautifully landscaped parks and fine, affordable restaurants.
