The City
The city of Aachen (population 246,000), located in northwest Germany at the intersection with the Netherlands and Belgium, is renowned as the permanent residence of Charlemagne and capital of his empire. The city's wonderful gothic cathedral (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), begun during Charlemagne's reign (8th century), now holds his remains. The cathedral hosted the coronation of over 30 Holy Roman Emperors and is an important tourist attraction. Although Aachen was heavily damaged during World War II, the cathedral and the 14th century town hall were spared. Today the city's proximity to Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt give it a truly international feel and its sulfur springs and spas attract visitors from many of those cities.
