Why QAOM at UC?

What makes the QAOM Department different from other choices you might have for pursuing your PhD in quantitative analysis or operations management?

  • The faculty. The QAOM Department prides itself on the individual attention we give our students. Graduate education is considered our highest priority. We have maintained the highest standards of methodological rigor in our programs for over 30 years. A recent study presented at the National Decision Sciences Meeting ranked the UC QAOM faculty in the top ten in the country in research productivity and quality in operations management. We are also excellent teachers. Members of the department have won the college's EXCEL award for undergraduate teaching excellence, as well as the MBA Association's Award for Teaching Excellence. The QAOM faculty are energetic, enthusiastic, and committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service. Departmental faculty consistently publish in leading academic journals, have received professional recognition for teaching, research, and service, and have written several leading textbooks. The QAOM Dept. has been recognized as one of the university's 'Centers of Excellence' through the State of Ohio Academic Excellence Program.
  • The urban environment. We take advantage of our urban environment and the opportunity it affords for solving real problems. The Greater Cincinnati area is a wonderful laboratory in which to learn. Teams of faculty and/or PhD students have recently completed projects for Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati Gas & Electric, The Kroger Company, General Revenue Corporation, Federated Department Stores, Omnicare, McKesson Automated Pharmacy Systems, and others. These projects have resulted in benefits of hundreds of millions of dollars for these companies. If you are interested in solving real problems we could be the choice for you.
  • Computer facilities. Lindner Hall, which houses the CoB, has over $2 million worth of computer equipment dedicated to student and faculty use, including hundreds of student workstations. Software packages such as SAS, SPSS and LISREL can be found on any lab machine as well as on the Terminal Servers. Optimization software, including CPLEX, LINDO and MPSX are available in the department, as is licensed simulation software such as Arena.
  • Financial aid. The PhD programs in QA and OM are small and highly selective. Most students we admit are offered substantial financial aid. The typical support is $13,000 for the academic year with full tuition waiver. An additional $3,000 of support in the summer is also typical. Outstanding applicants are considered to be named as one of the College of Business's Siddall Scholars. Siddall Scholars receive additional financial support over the standard offer.
