The Entrepreneurship/Family Business integral provides preparation in starting your own business or working for a closely-held firm. Emphasis is placed on real issues and interactions with individuals who work and/or advise such firms.
The program begins with an introduction to the issues and concerns unique to closely-held business. This is followed with options providing detailed information on organizational forms (C-corps, S-Corps, partnerships, proprietorships, and LLP's); accounting, financial, information system, tax, and legal issues unique to private firms; and what is required in starting up a new firm from scratch. Concluding the program is a field experience with a local start-up or closely held firm to apply first hand the knowledge gained throughout the curriculum.
The aspiring entrepreneur will find this program quite appealing. Integrating this program with a focus business area will provide ample opportunities. For instance, pairings with information systems could lead to work as an independent consultant; choose accounting and you could do personal tax work. In addition, with down-sizing in large, public firms, the job opportunities in generally smaller (often family or private) businesses are increasing.
