Program Description: Despite the reality that the global supply chain of the 21st century has become increasingly complex and subject to more and more risk, most companies do not have risk mitigation practices in place. This workshop will explore the major sources and reasons for the problem including opportunities for improvement, pitfalls to avoid, and specific approaches for developing a supply chain risk strategy. Questions addressed during this workshop will include:
- What types of risk exist in the supply chain and why should we be concerned about them?
- How can supply chains be designed to lessen the impact of catastrophic events (e.g. terrorism, hurricanes, fires, supply disruption) as well as new operating realities (e.g. longer supply lines, outsourcing, lean operations)?
- What techniques and tools are available to help manage risk?
- Is there an inherent conflict between reducing risk while also focusing on lean / highly efficient operations (e.g. less inventory, fewer facilities, fewer suppliers)?
- How can the business case be developed to insure that the tradeoffs among risks and costs are balanced?
To answer these questions, case studies will be presented, including Q & A to discuss issues in more detail. In addition, the event will provide opportunities to network and share alternative supply chain perspectives.
