High-Impact Research - Management

The Department of Management is a leader in high-impact research. As one example of impact, a recent study of the top 3 journals from 2000-2003 (Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Review, and Academy of Management Journal) revealed the following:

In terms of total author-articles (i.e. one article with 3 authors from one school received credit for 3), the UC Management Department ranked 27th (tied for 13th if total articles and ties are included). A total of 226 institutions were represented in all 3 journals over this period. To add perspective, there are over 900 business schools in the US.
For public or state supported schools (total of 107 in sample) UC ranked in the top 20. If ties are included, we tied for 12th (with Ohio State, Penn State, Connecticut and Southern California).
Five of our 12 research faculty published in these 3 journals during the time period, with other having articles in the pipeline. This is noteworthy, as some schools are dominated by one or two authors appearing in these journals.
Given varying department sizes at different universities, a measure of productivity was also used to "level the playing field." This measure was "number of articles/number of research faculty". In productivity, UC's Management department ranked 11th out of 226, and 8th out of public school. (This measure ranks UC ahead of such schools as Texas A&M, Maryland, Arizona State, Indiana, Iowa, Penn State, Purdue, Michigan, Minnesota, Penn, Harvard, Ohio State and Stanford).

While there are many ways to measure research excellence, presence in the top, all-purpose management journals is certainly one objective approach to comparison. As such, we are exceedingly proud that the UC Management department is among the elite research programs in management.
