New MS in Finance to Train Investment Professionals
In Fall 2005, the College will offer a new one-year Master of Science in Finance (MS-Finance) Program to train investment professionals and financial analysts. A growing need for highly-trained and certified investment professionals prompted the Finance Department to design the MS-Finance Program to prepare students for the increasing complexity of financial securities, markets, and financial statements.
A key value of the program is that it provides the training necessary to pass the CFA exam. The CFA Institute® administers a series of exams to certify finance professionals; the exams, combined with sufficient work experience, qualify students to become certified as Chartered Financial Analysts. The examination process is rigorous, with pass rates in 2004 of 34%, 32%, and 64% respectively for the Level I, II, and III exams. CFA Institute® surveys show that CFA® charterholders earn 25% more than non-charterholders with similar experience. In 2003, the median compensation for a CFA® with ten years of experience was $203,000.

MBA Program Innovation
The College of Business is rolling out a redesigned MBA curriculum to better reflect our changing student demographic and to respond to the needs of the business community. With MBA tuition escalating nationally, our accelerated and combined MBA/MS programs provide our students with the optimal return on their investment. The key features are highlighted below.
Triple Option. The College now offers three full-time MBA designs:
- an accelerated 12-month option
- a 15-month option that includes a paid summer internship
- a 21-month program that combines the full-time MBA and summer internship with a specialized Master of Science (MS) degree in Accounting, Finance, Information Systems, Marketing, Quantitative Analysis, or Tax.
New Part-Time Curriculum. The part-time MBA curriculum is now organized into five blocks:
- fundamental tools courses
- a course set of the functional business frameworks – managerial economics, finance, financial and managerial accounting, marketing, operations, and information systems
- cross-disciplinary courses, including global (economic and cultural), legal, ethical, technological, and organizational contexts
- expertise building through specialized electives
- core material is integrated through a course in corporate strategy and a capstone project
Beyond an initial set of courses, students may take courses within a block in any order. This flexibility allows students to complete the program in a timely manner even if they must carry a reduced load or skip a quarter.
New Full-Time Curriculum. T he Comprehensive Hands-on Integrative Management Experience (CHIME) is a program-long project in which students create and champion new products and solutions that will influence actual business decisions. At the outset of the program, a topical business challenge or opportunity (e.g., identity theft and online commerce, intellectual property protection, outsourcing, RFID, Sarbanes-Oxley) is introduced. The whole class works together to develop and market innovative solutions that will respond to the business need. At the end of the program, the class will present its solutions to industry experts.

College of Business “Extends” Its Reach
As today's students seek to complete their bachelor's degree later in life while working full-time, after completing an associate degree, or after leaving another university, it's clear that the one-size bachelor's degree no longer fits all. To provide our students flexibility and to help them meet their professional goals, this fall the College of Business unveils a new undergraduate Bachelor of Business Administration Program option - the BBA EXTEND.
Based on focus groups with over 100 students currently in regional business programs, BBA EXTEND has been designed for holders of an associate degree or equivalent learning to complete their BBA degree from the University of Cincinnati in as little as two years. Part-time students can complete the program in four years. Both options allow students to earn their degrees without having to come to the Uptown Campus.
The BBA EXTEND also offers the option of two new majors – the Accounting & Finance major and the Management & Marketing major. These majors have been developed to meet the needs of students and professionals seeking a bachelor's degree in a focused and actionable field of study.
To make the BBA degree more accessible to students throughout the Cincinnati region, the EXTEND option in both full and part-time versions will be offered at multiple sites – full-time at Raymond Walters College and Clermont College, and part-time at Raymond Walters, Clermont and the Uptown Campus. The new program will serve non-traditional students who are employed full-time, as well as traditional students who have begun post-secondary education at a regional campus.
BBA EXTEND is expected to enroll nearly 200 students when classes begin in September 2005.

SAP America, Inc., a subsidiary of SAP AG, has awarded a $675,000 gift over five years to the College of Business to implement a visionary corporate-university partnership – the SAP Enterprise Systems Initiative.
The Initiative will combine program innovations, a state-of-the-art lab facility, and the College's world-class faculty expertise to give students an all-inclusive approach to learning business technology. The program will figure prominently in both undergraduate and graduate programs, fostering a holistic understanding of business technology through hands-on experience. Core courses will include an integration module that helps students understand the impact of technology across business functions.
“The ultimate goal of this gift is to help educators better prepare students to compete in the technically sophisticated workforce of the future,” said Mark White (BBA '79), CFO of SAP America, Inc. “More and more companies will hire graduates who have business technology experience.”
A key aspect of the program is SAP Fellows. Faculty will be selected based on their technology expertise to serve as resident experts and as a resource base to help students acquire deeper literacy in business technology applications.

New Homes in Costa Rica
During Spring Break, eleven UC students joined Lee Armstrong, CoB's Assistant Director of International Programs, and Siusan Durst, Professor of Spanish, to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity Costa Rica to construct homes for four families who had lost their homes and possessions in a flood earlier in the year. Volunteering in Costa Rica was a component of an International Business service learning course worth three credits.
Students volunteered on a blitz build in Sarapiqui, Costa Rica, along with at least 50 Costa Rican volunteers to raise six houses in five days. While digging foundations and mixing cement by hand alongside Costa Rican volunteers, students learned about teamwork, communicating across language barriers, adapting to a different concept of time, and the importance of relationships in Latin cultures.
This was the first year that the Spanish Department joined the College of Business on this interdisciplinary study abroad program. Involving Spanish speakers in the program encouraged our students to have more in-depth interactions with Costa Rican volunteers.
The group organized fundraisers to help with each person's $450 donation to Habitat for Humanity International. Employers, friends, and family also contributed to the required donation that is used to buy building materials. A typical three-bedroom house in Costa Rica costs about $7,000 to build.
The biggest reward of the volunteer experience for the UC students was being told by one of the Costa Rican home owners at the closing ceremony that each of them would always have a home and family to visit in Costa Rica.

Marketing Professor Wins International Award
The Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award of the Society for Consumer Psychology has been awarded to Marketing Professor Frank R. Kardes for outstanding research contributions. Dr. Kardes' research on judgment and consumer decision-making has been cited in more than 1,000 articles.
Michael L. Dean EXCEL Program
Fifteen years ago, CoB Faculty member Mike Dean (now Professor Emeritus), reflecting his own personal passion for teaching, endowed an awards program to motivate and recognize outstanding educators in the College. Called the Michael L. Dean EXcellence in Classroom Education and Learning (EXCEL) Award, this program over the years has made “no strings attached” grants to recipients totaling more than $100,000.
The EXCEL Awards make a positive statement to both current and prospective faculty as well as students and parents that CoB is serious about quality education. To this end, the awards serve as strong magnets, both to attract and retain quality educators as well as to recruit students by providing an important “point of difference.”
The initial EXCEL Award was limited to outstanding teaching at the undergraduate level. However, in the year 2000, a second EXCEL Award was established to honor teaching excellence at the graduate level. Now both programs recognize the “best of the best,” awarding a total of $10,000 annually or $5,000 each in recognition of excellence at the undergraduate level and separately at the graduate level.
Professor Emeritus Michael L. Dean now lives in Sedona, AZ, with his wife Carol. He is actively involved in community volunteer activities, including positions on philanthropic, cultural diversity, and religious institution boards. The Deans have two children and identical twin grandsons. [ Top of Page ]
